New Delhi today urged Colombo to start a dialogue with all communities in Sri Lanka including Tamils for a lasting solution to the ethnic conflict. Making a statement in the Lok Sabha today, theExternal Affairs Minister, S.M. Krishna said, the end of conflict provides an opportunity to Sri Lanka for a lasting political settlement of the issue. The Minister said that the commencement of a structured dialogue on pursuing on political solution for national reconsideration and reconstruction is a commendable development. He assured the Sri Lankan government all support to carry forward the process. He said that the devolution package would contribute towards creating the necessary conditions for reconciliation. Mr. Krishna dealt at length on the ethnic situation in Sri Lanka and said that the main objective of India is to ensure the welfare and well being of Sri Lankan Tamils including internally displaced persons, IDP's. He said India has also announced construction of 50 thousand houses namely IDP's . He said Prime Minister has also announced a package of five thousand crore rupees for the relief and rehabilitation of IDP's. Mr. Krishna said, during his meetings with his Sri Lankan counterpart in Thimpu, he conveyed India's concern over violence against Indian fishermen and stressed the need to ensure that these incidents do not recur.
