New Delhi urges Islamabad to transfer Sarabjit Singh to India for better medical treatment

New Delhi today asked Islamabad to consider the option of transferring Sarabjit Singh to India for better medical treatment. Sarabjit sustained several injuries when six prisoners attacked him in Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore on Friday. In a statement, the External Affairs Ministry said that it is clear from the recent medical bulletin that his condition remains critical. It said that the Indian High Commission is in touch with the medical authorities at Jinnah Hospital, Lahore where Srabjit Singh is admitted.

Meanwhile, India again appealed to the Pakistan to take a sympathetic and humanitarian view in Sarabjit Singh’s case and release him. It also reiterated its demand that the attack on Sarabjit Singh be thoroughly investigated to identify those who were responsible and to ensure that they are punished. New Delhi said that it is the responsibility of Pakistan to ensure the safety and security of all Indian prisoners in their custody.

Minister of External Affairs Salman Khurshid in the meantime said in Moscow that right now it is important Sarabjit gets the best possible medical attention. If his medical condition permits, we could fly him out and given him the best possible treatment , he said.

On the other hand Pakistan said that the best possible care is being given to Sarabjit Singh admitted in a Lahore hospital. Islamabad said there are no plans to move him. Information Minister Arif Nizami dismissed a report that a medical board is considering a proposal to send Sarabjit abroad. Nizami, a key member of the caretaker government said the caretaker govt has also taken steps to provide consular access to Sarabjit for Indian officials, he said.

Meanwhile, a Pakistani lawyer today sought court's intervention to send Sarabjit to Britain for better medical treatment.
