A two day workshop to build partnership between governments of Asian region and NGOs in implementation of UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities got underway in New Delhi today. Participants from 12 countries from West Asia, Central Asia and South Asia were present on the occasion. Inaugurating the event, Joint Secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Awnish Awasthi highlighted the need for such partnership between governmental and non governmental organisations for the upliftment of persons with disabilities.<br/><br/>He appreciated the role of National Federation of the Blind India in constructive partnership with the government in passage of new enactment on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities. Speaking on the occasion, President of Asian Blind Union, S K Rungta said, such gathering will be able to bring about positive changes in legislative and policy environment related to persons with disabilities at national and regional levels.
