India could not succeed to push through its application for membership in Nuclear Suppliers Group, NSG at the two day Plenary meet ended in Seoul on Friday. However, overwhelming number of members supported India's membership and appraised its application positively. Despite procedural hurdles persistently raised by China, a three-hour long discussion took place on Thursday night on the issue of future participation in the NSG and the broad sentiment was to take this matter forward. NSG declared its firm support for the full, complete and effective implementation of the NPT as the cornerstone of the international non-proliferation regime.

The statement by the 48-nation grouping, however, said that it will continue to have discussions on participation of countries which have not signed the Nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

India believes that an early decision on its application for membership remains in larger global interest and its participation in the NSG will further strengthen nuclear non-proliferation and make global nuclear commerce more secure. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup, in a statement said, it would advance energy security and make a difference to combating climate change. He expressed confidence that the NSG will recognize these benefits as it deliberates further on this issue.

On Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as a pre-condition for NSG membership, Mr Swarup said, the NSG itself had addressed this issue in September 2008 maintaining decision on India contributes to the widest possible implementation of the provisions and objectives of the NPT. He said, there is no contradiction between the NPT and India's closer engagement with the NSG.

India had applied for membership on 12th of last month, reflecting the progress in its engagement with the NSG. India's application has acquired immediacy in view of India's INDC envisaging 40 per cent non-fossil power generation capacity by 2030.
