New Delhi: Draft declaration at Rio +20 summit fully addresses India's concern

New Delhi says that the draft declaration at Rio +20 summit fully addresses India's concern. Talking to reporters in Rio De Janeiro after participating in the discussions to finalize the draft declaration, Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan said that the host Brazil used a very transparent and inclusive process in finalizing the draft which won all round support.

Mrs. Natarajan asserted that the significant development during negotiations for India is a restoration of the centrality of the principle of common but differentiated responsibility in the environment discourse. The Environment Minister said the conference will be remembered for kick starting the sustained development goals.

Our correspondent covering the summit reports from Rio De Janeiro that Heads of the States and Deputy leaders from over 120 countries are holding discussions to give their approval to the draft declaration. The draft sets clear goals for sustainable development and a plan of action to achieve green growth. AIR correspondent adds that the draft text proposes launching a process to achieve the millennium development goals.

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will address the plenary session later tonight. He is likely to emphasise in his address that the summit must not dilute the cardinal principles of Rio 1992 when the first earth summit was held 20 years ago.

Earlier, the Prime Minister said the UN conference on sustainable development is a historic opportunity to give content to the paradigm of sustainable development.

On the sidelines of the Rio Summit, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh held bilateral talks with his Nepalese counterpart Baburam Battarai. He will also meet Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakshe later this evening.
