New Delhi asks Pak to act effectively against terror groups

Ahead of the meeting of the Foreign Secretaries of India and Pakistan,New Delhi has said that Islamabad must act effectively against the terrorist groups which are seeking to destroy the prospects of peace and cooperation between the two neighbors.Speaking at a function organized by the Delhi Policy Group, the Foreign Secretary, Mrs. Nirupama Rao said that Pakistan must also shed its insecurity on asymmetries in size and capability between the two sides. She said that such differences of scale should not deter the two countries from working with each other. Reiterating that dialogue is the only way forward, Mrs. Rao said that progress can be made in this regard in an atmosphere free from terrorism. She said that the terrorism as a continuation of war by other means and the use of terrorist groups selectively as strategic assets against India cannot and must not continue. She also said that India is ready to address all issues of mutual concern through dialogue for bridging the trust deficit between the two neighbors. With regard to the water issue, Mrs.Rao said that breast beating propaganda and baseless charges alleging stealing of water and illegal construction of dams have poisoned the atmosphere. She said that the myth of water theft does not stand the test of rational scrutiny or reason. She said that India is committed to resolving whatever differences exist under the mechanism provided by the Indus Water Treaty.
