New Delhi all set for gala opening of 19th Commonwealth Games

All roads are today leading to the Jawarharlal Nehru Stadium, the venue of the opening ceremony of the 12 day sporting extravaganza, the 19th Commonwealth games. The President Mrs Pratiba Devi Singh Patil and Prince Charles, representing the Queen Elizabeth of England will declare the games open. The queen's baton will will be received by Prince Charles at the stadium. AIR correspondent says that the gala opening ceremony scheduled for 7 pm will have a spiritual touch with chants of various faiths being played in the background as performers, wearing costumes depicting different aspects of the pluralist character of India will present the theme song Swagatan in different Indian languages.The sound and light show.using aerostat the hillelium balloon will beam images of India's freedom struggle and its monuments. Also on show will be the 110 feet high tree of knowledge made of unique fabrics. Based on the guru shishya tradition, the tree is based on Chinar from kashmir , considered to be the symbol of peace. Enthusiastic crowds have lined up at the entrance of the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium to catch a glimpse of the gala show. The connectivity to the venue of the opening ceremony got a boost with the opening to public of the metro line from Sarita Vihar. Unprecedented security is in place to ensure incident free games. Gun trotting security personnel are manning the venues and the roads leading to the Stadiums. Meanwhile, in a bid to boost India's chances at the Commonwealth Games, Oil Minister today announced cash awards for Indian medal winners. Petroleum Sports Promotion Board has announced 10 lakh rupees for every gold medalist, seven and half lakh rupees for those bagging silver medalist and 5 lakh rupees for bronze medal winners.
