New defence procurement policy to be announced soon: Antony

Defence Minister A K Antony today said the new Defence Procurement Policy is in its final stages and will be announced soon.

Speaking to media persons in Kochi today, Mr Antony said the new policy will give further impetus to indigenisation of defence production and added that the new policy will be subject to annual review.

Stating that India has already expressed its solidarity with the Sri Lankan Tamils, he said the country is trying to help them despite constraints.

Mr Antony reiterated that those found guilty in the VVIP helicopter deal, will not be allowed to go scot-free.

Earlier, welcoming INS Sudarshini, which concluded today its nine nation tour of ASEAN countries which began on September 15 last year, the Defence Minister said the voyage could go a long way in reaffirming the country's commitment and strengthening of economic, cultural and diplomatic ties with the regional grouping.

Heads of missions of ASEAN countries were present to welcome the vessel.
INS Sudarshini called at 13 ports in nine ASEAN countries during the voyage which lasted 191 days.
