New 72-hrs ceasefire comes into effect in Gaza

Israel and Palestinian groups including Hamas have accepted a new ceasefire plan proposed by Egypt. The 72 hour ceasefire came into effect from 2.30 am Indian time today. Palestinian negotiators were the first to accept the Egyptian ceasefire plan. Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhari told in Gaza that the new negotiations would be the last chance for a deal. Israeli Government spokesman endorsed the move and said, negotiators would return to Cairo for peace talks, if the truce held. UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has welcomed the move and called upon both sides to avoid any steps which would lead to a return to violence. Our AIR correspondent reports that under the plan brokered by Egypt, both sides will stop fire and return to negotiating table in Cairo for comprehensive and permanent ceasefire. Israeli team had flown back home after attempts to reach a new truce deal failed and fighting resumed. Hamas has been insisting on lifting the blockade of Gaza for resumption of truce talks while Israel says, it can be dealt with only in any future talks on a permanent peace deal with the Palestinians. The month long conflict has claimed over 1900 Palestinian lives, mostly civilians. Israel on the other hand has lost 64 soldiers and three civilians in the conflict so far. It is hoped that the new truce plan will help create an atmosphere for a durable ceasefire and peace in the region.
