Nepal's political deadlock continues as it fails to elect its PM yet again

Nepal's political deadlock continues with the parliament failing to elect a new Prime Minister in the 10th round of voting held on Wednesday afternoon. The lone Nepali Congress candidate failed to get the required simple majority. Unified CPN(Maoist) candidate Prachanda withdrew from the electoral fray before the 8th round of voting held on 26th of last month, leaving Poudel as the lone candidate to contest the election.Announcing the result parliament Speaker Subhash Nemwang said out of a total of 156 lawmakers who took part in the voting process, Poudel secured 109 votes in his favour, far below the 300 votes required for his election. The Speaker announced that the next round of voting will take place tomorrow afternoon. AIR Kathmandu Correspondent reports that out of the current 599 members in parliament, more than 400 including the United CPN(Maoist), CPN(UML), Tarai parties and over a dozen smaller parties did not take part in the voting process.Nepal's political deadlock continues with the failure to elect a new Prime Minister even after the 10th rounds of voting held in parliament this afternoon. Defying the request made by the Maoists and CPN(UML) in the meeting of the three major parties held this afternoon, Nepali Congress has said it will not withdraw its candidate from the contest unless the major parties agree on a concrete plan of action on clearing the hurdles that have impeded Nepal’s peace and constitution drafting process and power-sharing structure of the new government. Major political parties have however decided to continue their dialogue process to find a way out to resolve the political deadlock that has not only delayed formation of the new government but also led to a financial crisis as the care-taker government could not pass the annual budget for the current financial year.”
