Nepal's parliament will go for sixth the round of voting this afternoon to elect a new Prime Minister. The re-polling is being held as both the contesting candidates Unified CPN(Maoist) Chairman Prachanda and the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party leader Ram Chandra Poudyal failed to muster the simple majority required to get elected in the last five rounds of polling held since the 21st of July after the resignation of Prime Minister Mr. Madhav on June 30. In the existing 599 – member parliament, a winning candidate must secure 300 votes to obtain a simple majority. “While the CPN(UML) has decided not to take part in the electoral process, United Democratic Madheshi Front – an alliance of four Terai parties – Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Nepal, Madhesh Janadhikar Forum (Loktantrik), Terai Madhes Democratic Party and Sadbhavana Party – has not yet decided whom to lent its support- the Maoist candidate Prachanda or his Nepali Congress rival Ram Chandra Poudyal in today's voting. Analyst say that political parties including the CPN(UML) have been calling for a national consensus government without any tangible progress towards that direction in spite of a seven-point proposal floated by the UML to conclude the peace process and form a national unity government. Meanwhile, the opposition Unified CPN(Maoist) have landed in a controversy. A leaked audio tape telecast by Nepalese television channel alleged that the party sought 500 million Nepalese rupees from China to influence lawmakers to vote for party Chairman Prachanda. In a telephonic conversation, the person alleged to be Maoist Foreign Affairs Chief Krishna Kumar Mahara is purportedly heard asking a Chinese official for 500 million Nepalese rupees to influence 50 lawmakers to vote for the Maoist Chairman Prachanda to choose a new Prime Minister. But, Mahara described the audio tape as totally fabricated, misleading and fictitious.
