Nepal's Parliament goes for 3rd round of polling today to elect new PM

Nepal, parliament goes for a third round of polling this afternoon to elect a new Prime Minister. Both the contesting candidates – Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda of the Unified CPN(Maoist) and Ram Chandra Poudyal of Nepali Congress had failed to muster the simple majority in the two rounds of polling held on 21st and 23rd of July. The CPN(UML), the third largest party in the constituent assembly had decided not to support any of two candidates. AIR Kathmandu correspondent reports that, the meeting held between the four Terai based parties and the Unified CPN(Maoist) on Monday ended inconclusively with the Madheshi leaders saying they will announce their stand on today's election later in the day. AIR Correspondent reports, the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF), which comprises four Tarai-based parties, with its 82 seats in the parliament plays a key role in formation of the government after the CPN(UML) decided not to participate in the polling process. The Maoists, who have 237 seats in the parliament, would need 64 more votes to obtain a simple majority of 300 votes. The Nepali Congress has 113 seats and would need the support of both the CPN(UML)which has 103 MPs and the UDMF to reach the simple majority mark. If Madhehi parties decides to remain neutral in Monday's election, the parliament will not be able to elect a Prime Minister and the formation of a new government will get further delayed.
