Nepal's Parliament goes for 3rd round of polling today to elect new PM

Nepal's Parliament will go for third round of polling this afternoon to elect a new Prime Minister. The re-polling is being held as both the contesting candidates – Unified CPN(Maoist) Chairman Prachanda and the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party leader Ram Chandra Poudyal failed to muster the simple majority required in the last two rounds of polling held on 21st and 23rd of July. In the existing 599 – member parliament, a winning candidate must secure 300 votes to obtain a simple majority. While the CPN(UML) has decided not to take part in the electoral process, UDMF an alliance of four Terai parties – Madhesi Janadhikar Forum, Madhesh Janadhikar Forum (Loktantrik), Terai Madhes Democratic Party and Sadbhavana Party – has not yet decided whom to lent its support- the Maoist candidate Prachanda or his Nepali Congress rival Ram Chandra Poudyal. Political commentators say parties in Nepal, including the CPN(UML) have been calling for a national consensus government without any tangible progress towards that direction. The country has been without an effective government since last one month after the resignation of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on June 30.
