Nepal's opposition Unified CPN (Maoist) in favour of regulated India-Nepal border

Nepal's opposition Unified CPN (Maoist) on Thursday indicated that his party favoured a regulated open border between India and Nepal and to review the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship.Talking to newsmen in Kathmandu before leaving for India to deliver the 3rd Anuradha Ghandy memorial lecture in Mumbai, Dr. Bhattarai said his party appreciated India's 'genuine security concern about the misuse of over 1700 Km long open border between the two countries so that criminals and terrorists do not indulge in activities that would go against the interests of India and Nepal. He said India should also understand Nepal's genuine concerns, which is why he said his party was seeking review of 1950 treaty. In reply to a question, on political deadlock in Nepal, Dr. Bhattarai said there is no alternative to formation of a consensus government led by his party, the largest in the parliament. He said his party is even ready to accept a prominent individual to head the government if there is a consensus amongst the parties.AIR Kathmandu correspondent reports that the Maoist leader's remarks came ahead of the amendment of the Nepal's unique parliamentary regulations on the election of the Prime Minister in an attempt to break the deadlock over the election of a new head of government after Nepali Congress candidate Poudyal, the sole candidate for the post, withdrew from the race.
