Nepal's opposition alliance protest to force govt to withdraw Constitution amendment bill

Nepal's main opposition alliance led by CPN UML launched a protest today in the capital to force the government to withdraw the Constitution amendment bill aimed at addressing the demands of agitating Madhesi parties.<br/><br/>Chairman of the nine party alliance, KP Sharma Oli said, the government should not push the constitution amendment bill following the Supreme Court's verdict which cleared that anything against the constitution will be invalid. He said, the amendment bill registered by the Prime Minister Prachanda-led coalition government in the Parliament violated constitutional provisions.<br/><br/>The amendment bill aims to accommodate the demands of the agitating Madhesi and other ethnic groups that include citizenship and boundary demarcation issues among others. Madhesis, mostly of Indian-origin, launched a six-month- long agitation from September 2015 to February last year in which more than 50 people were killed.
