Nepal's Constituent Assembly gets three month extension

In Nepal, a constitutional crisis has been averted with the three major political parties agreeing to a five point deal, including three month extension for the Constituent Assembly. The UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML agreed to extend the Constituent Assembly by three months initially, complete the first draft of the constitution within three months, resignation of Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal to pave the way for a consensus government and restructuring of Nepal army by implementing the past agreements signed with the Madhesi Morcha. The deal was signed by UCPN (Maoist), Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala and CPN-UML Chairman and Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal. This was placed in the Constituent Assembly in the wee hours this morning and passed by more than two-third majority. However the United Democratic Madhesi Front an alliance of five madhes based parties with 70 members abstained from voting. Earlier, the House session scheduled to begin at 8 am yesterday was delayed by over 15 hours after the parties could not forge consensus on tenure extension. Speaker Subash Chandra Nemwang convened the House at 11:14 last night. Minister for Law and Justice Prabhu Sah tabled the ninth Interim Constitution amendment bill proposing Constitutional Assembly tenure extension to avert a constitutional crisis in the event of failure to begin the process of endorsing the bill by Saturday midnight.
