In Nepal, over 3000 representatives of Nepali Congress from across the country are taking part in polling to elect a 64-member Central Working Committee including three key posts of the party President, General Secretary and Treasurer on the last day of the 12th national convention of the party in Kathmandu. A total of 340 candidates are in the fray. Three candidates including the current Acting President Sushil Koirala, former three-time Prime Minister Sher Bhadur Deuba and a veteran leader Bhim Bahadur Tamang are contesting for the post of the Party President and successor to the late Girija Prasad Koirala who passed away in March this year. Of the total 85 members in the Central Working Committee – the apex decision making body of the party, 21 members will be nominated by the party President. For the first time in its history, Nepali Congress has reserved seats for women, Adhvasi-Janjati, Dalits, Madhesi and Muslim community to make the central committee more inclusive and broad based. The counting of votes for the posts of the President will begin soon after completion of the voting process and the results are expected by late tonight. According to the party constitution, a candidate is required to secure at least 51 per cent of the votes cast to be eligible for election.
