In Nepal, the Acting President of Nepali Congress, Sushil Koirala has been elected the new Party President for a term of four years succeeding Girija Prasad Koirala.Koirala secured 1,652 votes while his immediate rival and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba polled 1,317 votes in the election held during the 12 general convention of the country's oldest party on Tuesday. The third contestant Bhim Bahadur Tamang polled 78 votes. More than 3000 party representatives who attended the convention took part in the voting. The counting of votes for the post of party President took place at Tuesday midnight and results were declared early this morning. Vote counting for the remaining 63-member Central Working Committee including that of the posts of General Secretary and Treasurer will be taken up later today. Talking to newsmen, newly elected party President Koirala said his priority will be try to strengthen the party on the basis of its democratic ideology, principles and policies by taking into confidence all sections of the party and to maintain the unity and cohesion in the party. He said, efforts will be made to rectify the inherent weaknesses within the party and take decisions on the basis of understanding and consensus. AIR Kathmandu correspondent reports that the 12th general convention of the Nepali Congress which concluded on Tuesday has made ending the peace process and writing of the new constitution as its key national agenda with emphasis on strengthening the ideological and organizational structure of the party and socio-economic development of the country.
