Nepal Supreme Court upholds conviction of Nepali Congress leader

In Nepal, the Supreme Court has upheld the decision of the Special Court to convict former Minister and Nepali Congress leader Chiranjibi Wagle on corruption charges. On Wednesday, a bench of Chief Justice Ram Prasad Shrestha and Justice Khil Raj Regmi , besides slapping a fine of Rs 20.3 million,also announced a verdict of eighteen months imprisonment citing that Wagle failed to show the sources of his property.In 2004, the Special Court had handed him a two and a half year jail sentence along with Rs.27.3 million fine, convicting him in corruption charges when he was minister. Wagle had filed a petition at the Apex Court challenging the lower court’s verdict and secured bail. Earlier, the Commission of Investigation of Abuse of Authority had dragged him to court in 2002, accusing him of amassing property by misusing his authority while holding a ministerial berth. He is the most senior political leader to have been convicted of corruption in recent times.
