Nepal student protest against petro price hike affects life in Kathmandu

In Nepal, the general strike called by various student unions against the petroleum price hike has partially affected normal life in the capital today.There are less vehicles running on the roads. Educational instiutions are closed and the bigger shops in the main business centres remain closed. While security is tight and there have been stray incidents of vandalism. Police have detained 39 bandh enforcers. The government affiliated unions, Nepali Congress affiliated Nepal Student Union and CPN-UML affiliated National Free Students' Union (ANNIFSU) have withdrawn their support to the general strike. The government run Nepal Oil Corporation had raised the price of petroleum by ten rupees last Friday while the price of diesel and kerosene by six rupees a litre. The student Unions are demanding the the rollback of the prices.
