Nepal promises not to allow any anti-India activity

Nepal today promised not to allow its territory to be used for any anti-India activity as the two countries discussed ways to step up cooperation in security and other issues. External Affairs Minister S M Krishna held delegation- level talks with Nepalese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala in Kathmandu on a wide range of subjects that also covered developmental assistance and projects to be undertaken by India. The two sides discussed border security and crimes like smuggling of fake currency, arms, humans and drugs and ways to combat them through cooperation.Earlier this month, Nepal police, acting on CBI's request, had arrested four people, including two Pakistani nationals and the son of an influential politician in connections with a fake Indian currency and drugs racket having links to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. India has been voicing concerns about ISI using Nepalese territory for carrying out anti-India activities. Talking to reporters Ms Koirala said, there is a need for upgrading investigating skills to check money laundering and for detection of fake currency and arms smuggling and curbing insurgency. Mr Krishna, who is in Kathmandu on a three-day trip, earlier told reporters on his arrival that his visit will further strengthen bilateral relations and extend it to other areas which have not been covered so far. He said, India's close relations with Nepal encompass a broad spectrum including trade, commerce, investment, water resources, security, power, education and human resource development. The two sides will sign four pacts, including one forconstruction of a road in Terai, during the visit. The road, that will provide better connectivity with India, will be built at a cost of 680 crore rupees. Another pact will be in the power sector and entails electrification of five villages in Nepal. MoUs will also be signed for establishment of a Scientific and Research Centre in Nepal and providing Central Depository System facility for Nepal Stock Exchange.
