Nepal: Political parties intensify parleys

In Nepal, political parties have intensified their parleys for formation of the new government with only three days left for the election of a new Prime Minister through simple majority in parliament. Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Poudyel who was proposed as a party Prime Ministerial candidate held a meeting with leaders four Terai based parties to garner their support for the post of the Prime Minister. Talking to newsmen, Chairman of Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum Upendra Yadav said that the Madhesi parties would take a formal decision after a joint meeting of the four Madehesi parties. He said, they would lent their support to a party that would ensure the completion of the peace process, constitution writing and fulfil the long pending demands of the Terai parties. The Nepali Congress has expressed optimism that it would win the support of Madhesi parties. "Except for Nepali Congress, the second largest party in the parliament, who has unanimously proposed the name of parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Poudyal as its Prime Ministerial candidate, no other major party has so far announced their candidates with only three days left for the election of the new Prime Minister through a simple majority in parliament. Unified CPN(Maoist), the largest party in the parliament has said the party is open for an alternative leadership to Prachanda, both within and outside the party. But the party has so far did not disclose the name of its Prime Ministerial candidate. CPN(UML), the third largest party has also made no formal announcement of its Prime Ministerial candidate, although the party has said it ready to lead a new government if it gets required support from other parties. 16 Small parties in the parliament have called for a consensus government including all 25 parties in the constituent assembly for ensuring lasting peace and drafting of the constitution even as uncertainty continues on the power equation the new Nepal government." Meanwhile, the opposition Unified CPN(Maoist) held separate meetings with the small parties in the constituent assembly and with the Terai based parties this afternoon to seek their support for a Maoist led government.
