Nepal PM urges parties to focus on drafting Constitution

In Nepal, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has urged political parties to give top priority to drafting of the new Constitution to ensure that the new statute is promulgated within the scheduled date of May 28th. He said failing to do so would mean non-fulfilment of the commitment made to the people. Addressing a function at Butwal in western region yesterday, Mr. Mahdav Nepal criticized the Maoist statement that integration of its combatants should take place only after the new constitution comes into effect and a new security policy is defined. Mr. Madhav Nepal said such a move would go against past agreements and raise doubts in the minds of the people on their intentions. The Prime Minister said there is no need to extend the date for promulgation of the constitution and called for consensus and political commitments for timely drafting of the statute. AIR Kathmandu Correspondent reports that the constituent assembly has begun the process of drafting the first preliminary draft of the new constitution by sending one concept paper, out of eleven to the constitutional committee.
