Nepal's law makers will go to the polls in parliament on Wednesday to elect a new Prime Minister, for which the nomination process was completed last evening. Unified CPN-Maoist Chairman Prachanda, Nepali Congress Parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Poudyal and CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal are in the electoral fray. The election of Prime Minister is necessitated as the political parties could not form a government based on consensus within the 12 day dateline set by the President Ram Baran Yadav following the resignation of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on 30th of last month. In the 601-member parliament, the winning candidate would need the support of at least 301members to form the government. Unified CPN (Maoist) the largest party has a strength of 238 while the Nepali Congress has 114 and CPN(UML) has109 seats. AIR Kathmandu Correspondent reports, if any of the candidates fails to secure a simple majority, a second round of election will take place at a later date. Nepal has been passing through a political uncertainty for weeks after the sudden resignation of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on June 30 due to pressure from the Maoists. The fresh election for a new Prime Minister is the result of political parties failure to form a consensus government within the dateline set by the President. Nepal’s interim constitution allows the President to ask the parties to form a majority government if there is no consensus among parties. Political analyst says since none of the three parties enjoy clear majority in the 601-member Constituent Assembly it seems unlikely that anyone would secure the simple majority needed to get elected as the next Prime Minister to lead a new government. It is too early to predict anything, but to see how the election process will unfold as the voting process gets underway later on Wednesday.
