Nepal Parliament fails to elect new PM

Nepal's parliament could not elect a new Prime Minister even in the seventh round of voting today. Chairman of the Unified CPN (Maoist) and party candidate Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda secured 252 votes out of a total of 521 votes cast in today's run-off, while his only rival Ram Chandra Poudel of Nepali Congress polled 119 votes. Both the candidates fell short of 300 votes required to get elected in the existing 599-member parliament. The next round of polling will be held on 26th of September.AIR Kathmandu Correspondent reports, neither of the two candidates secured the required majority as CPN (UML) and Tarai based parties along with smaller parties in the parliament abstained from voting process. According to parliamentary regulations, the voting process will continue until one of the two candidates gets elected.
