Nepal: Life back to normal as Maoist-led bandh suspended

In Nepal, life is limping to back to normal from this morning as the opposition Unified CPN(Maoist) announced suspension of its indefinite general strike on Friday night. The Maoist had called indefinite bandh from 2nd of this month that paralysed normal life in Kathmandu and other parts of the country for the past six days. Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal today welcomed the move to postpone its indefinite general strike and expressed hope that the step would pave the way for consensus, dialogue and cooperation. In a statement, the Prime Minister emphasised that there is no alternative to consensus among the parties to conclude the peace process and drafting of the constitution. Ruling coalition partners – Nepali Congress and CPN(UML) have also welcomed the Maoist decision to postpone its indefinite bandh. In separate statements, the leader of the Nepali Congress parliamentary party Ramchandra Poudyal and CPN(UML) Chairman Jhalnath Khanal, emphasized the need to arrive at an agreement among the parties to complete the peace process and drafting of the constitution. AIR Correspondent reports that leaders of various political parties, chamber of commerce and industries and leaders of civil society welcomed the Maoist decision to withdraw the general strike. The Maoists have however decided to continue its protest programmes with a rally and public meeting in Kathmandu later today and to hold a demonstration in front of Singhadarbur – the main complex housing key government ministries including the Prime Minister's office on Sunday. The party said it will continue protest programme until its demands for peace, constitution and formation of a national government is met. The withdrawal of the general strike has, however paved the way for political parties to take forward the dialogue process in a more congenial atmosphere and seek a way out to the current political deadlock through consensus and cooperation before the May 28 dateline for promulgation of the new constitution arrives. The Prime Minister has already initiated a move in this regard by calling a meeting of ten political parties supporting the government this afternoon.
