Nepal launches hundred day campaign to end discrimination

Nepal’s President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav today said it is a challenge to remove caste discrimination and untouchability and bring the marginilasied group into the development process. He was speaking at function in Kathmandu ,launching the hundred day campaign to end discrimination and untouchability. Dr. Yadav said that though the laws have been passed there s a need to bring awareness in society and such campaign could help .Local Development Minister ,Mr. Top Bahadur Mahji while expressing solidarity with the campaign said that Nepal can bring economic revolution and build a new Nepal if racial discrimination is ended by introducing provisions of rewards and punishment.Welcoming the promulgation of the Caste- based Discrimination and Untouchability Offence and Punishment Act 2011 , Head of the Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights (OHCHR) Nepal, Ms Jyoti Sanghera said that caste based discrimination and untouchability are still prevalent. The campaign has been launched by OHCHR and the National Dalit Commission with the slogan ‘I commit to end caste discrimination and untouchability ‘. The campaign is to raise awareness on the key elements of the new Act across the country, with a particular focus on the remote areas.
