Nepal govt unveils long-term ambitious plan of generating hydroelectricity

Nepal government has unveiled a long-term ambitious plan of generating over 36,000 MW of hydroelectricity in the country within the next 20 years.A report prepared by a task force led by former Secretary at the Water and Energy Commission Secretariat Kishore Thapa on – '20-Year Hydropower Development Plan Formulation' proposes to address the current load shedding crisis within next five years with the generation of over 2000 MW.Presenting the report at the Ministry of Energy in Kathmandu, Thapa said the 20-Year Hydropower development target will be attainable through the completion of the three mega multipurpose projects including Pancheswor, Karnali-Chisapani and Saptakoshi. Thapa stressed the need for favourable investment climate to achieve its long term ambitious plan.Addressing the programme, Energy Minister Dr. Prakash Saran Mahat said the comprehensive hydropower generation plan laid down by his ministry will serve as a guiding tool for the next government. Stressing the need to set up more transmission lines, the Minister said the government is working on 400kn Anarmani-Mahendranagar line in Terai region and a 200 kv line in the hills.The outgoing government in its last year's budget has set a target of generating 25,000 MW of power in 20 years.
