Nepal govt launches Mass Drug Administration programme

In Nepal, the government has launched a Mass Drug Administration programme in thirty-six districts today and tomorrow with the aim to eliminate Elephantiasis-Lymphatic Filariasis. Around 65,000 volunteers and 9500 health workers are being moblisied for the programme. Executive Director of Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, Dr. Saroj P Rajendra said a woman volunteer is being mobilized for 40 households in the hilly areas and a volunteer to cover fifty households in Terai areas. Filariasis is considered the second dreaded disease among infectious ones causing permanent disability. Following WHO’s commitment to eliminate the disease, Nepal has committed to eliminate the disease by 2015.
