Nepal goes to 2nd round of polls today to elect new PM

Nepal's law makers will hold the second round of election this afternoon to elect a new Prime Minister. Unified CPN(Maoist) Chairman Prachanda and Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Poudyel who failed to muster the simple majority required to get elected in the first phase of election on Wednesday will try their luck in today's election.Leaders of both the contesting partied held a series of meetings with Terai based and other smaller parties in the parliament to garner their support yesterday and will continue their parleys with other parties till voting time Friday afternoon.CPN(UML) Chairman Jhalnath Khanal, who withdrew from the electoral race in the last minute on Wednesday, said his party will stand by its central committee decision not to take part in the voting process until a consensus is achieved to form a national unity government. He appealed to both the Maoist and the Nepali Congress to help form a consensus government, saying a majority government will not help in achieving national goal of ending the peace process and drafting of the constitution. The four Terai based parties who have held a meeting on Thursday said they will support any party that will give written commitment on peace, constitution and addressing Terai issues. The Terai parties who have prepared a list of their demands are likely to announce their stand on the Prime Minister's election later on Friday. AIR Kathmandu Correspondent reports that if any of the candidates in today's re-poll fails to secure a simple majority, a third round of election will take place at a later date as stipulated in the interim constitution
