Nepal fails to elect PM; Set for 3rd round

In Nepal, the Parliament has decided to go for a third round of election to elect a new Prime Minister as both the contestants – Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda of the Unified CPN(Maoist) and Ram Chandra Poudyal of Nepali Congress failed to muster the simple majority in the re-poll held on Friday. Announcing the election result, Speaker of the Parliament Subhash Nemwang said both the candidates could not secure the required simple majority. Maoist candidate Prachanda polled 241 votes, while Ram Chandra Poudyel of Nepali Congress won 123 votes out of 572 votes. The Speaker said, the third round of election will be held on August 2. AIR Kathmandu Correspondent reports that the CPN(UML), four Terai based parties and smaller parties that constitutes a total strength of over 240 members in the parliament abstained from the voting.
