Counting of votes for the third and final phase of local elections in Nepal is almost complete. Results of 133 local bodies out of 136 have been declared. Now results of just 3 local bodies including Birgunj, the only metropolitan city of Province 2 is awaited. <br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that Nepali Congress has emerged as number one party. It has won 39 posts of Mayor and Chairperson. Sanghiya Samajwadi Forum Nepal won 25, Rashtriya Janata Party Nepal 24, Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) 21, Communist Party of Nepal (UML) 18 posts, Nepal Loktantrik Forum 3 and others have also won 3 posts.<br/><br/>Polling in Province 2 to elect 6627 local representatives was held on September 18. Local elections in Nepal were held after a gap of 20 years. Successful completion of local elections is a significant step towards strengthening democracy in Nepal. <br/><br/>As per the new constitution it is necessary to complete, local, province and parliament elections by January 21 next year. Provincial and parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held in two phases on November 26 and December 7.
