In Nepal, the constitutional committee mandated to write the new statute has called a special meeting of the committee on 9th of this month along with the leaders of all 25 political parties in the constituent assembly to find a way out on timely drafting of the new constitution, with only 80 days left to meet the May 28 dateline.

The constitution committee called the special meeting after it failed to meet the date line on preparing the first draft of the statute on the 5th of this month. The committee is yet to start the work due to the failure of the thematic committees to submit their recommendations on the key aspects of the statute.

Only two of the 11 thematic committees have submitted their reports so far as the big parties- particularly the Nepali Congress, CPN(UML) and Maoists remained undecided on the basic framework of the constitution, such as the modality of federalism, the form of government and judicial system.

AIR correspondent C.K. Dorjee reports from Kathmandu that while political parties continue to claim that the constitution would be drafted within the May 28 dateline, there are few who are of the opinion that the interim constitution be amended to postpone the dateline for promulgation of the new constitution.

Some politicians and constitutional experts say that a mini-constitution could be promulgated to avert any crisis as the interim constitution provides that the May 28 deadline may be extended by six months in case of a national emergency.
