Nepal agrees to extend UN mission

Nepal government and the opposition Maoists have agreed to request UN Security Council for extending the term of its mission in Nepal for the last time for four months with no reduction in its mandate.This follows a four-point agreement signed by the Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and the Chairman of the Unified CPN (Maoist) Prachanda in Kathmandu last night after a series of discussions between the government and the Maoist representatives to iron out differences on the issue of UNMIN's term extension and its mandate.Talking to newsmen, Home Minister Bhim Rawal said the two sides have agreed to seek extension of UNMIN's term for four months and to begin the remaining task of peace process on integrating and rehabilitation of Maoist combatants from 17th of this month and to complete it by middle of January next.AIR kathmandu Correspondent reports that the government will send a letter to the UN Security Council today seeking extension of UNMIN's term for four months on the bais of its agreement with the Maoists. UNMIN's extended term expires on Wednesday. This will be the seventh term extension since its establishment in 2007.
