Nehru Cup Football: India take on Syria

The 15th edition of the Nehru Cup football tournament kick offs at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi today. Hosts India will clash with Syria in the opening league match at 7 this evening. All India Radio will broadcast the live commentary from 1855 hrs to 2050 hrs or till the end of the match on FM Rainbow and Rajdhani channel. Hosts India, the only team in the tournament having 2 Nehru Cup titles to their name, will begin their campaign today with a match against Syria. At the Jawahar Lal Nehru stadium, India have beaten Syria in the two matches played between them, with both the encounters being the finals of the last two editions in 2007 and in 2009. In 2007, India won 1-0, while in 2009, India beat Syria 5-4 in penalties after a 1-1 draw. These stats will surely give India lots of confidence. But, India would be aware that every tournament is altogether a new one and a little carelessness in the initial stage might prevent them from winning the title for the third consecutive time. The 12-day tournament will be played in round robin style, the final of which is slated to take place on the 2nd of September. Top two teams at the end of the tournament will play in the finals. Besides India and Syria, Nepal, Maldives and Cameroon are participating in the event.
