Need to use water in most sustainable manner: PM

The Prime Minister has stressed that water conservation should be made a people's movement in the country. Chairing the Prime Minister's Council on Climate Change, Dr. Manmohan Singh reiterated the need to create a general consciousness to use water in the most sustainable manner. He also approved in principle the National Water Mission and suggested to make available data on water in the public domain. He said this will help mobilise citizens and state government for focus attention on water conservation. Dr. Singh said that the political leadership at the local body level, state level and civil society organisation need to be involved in the activities of water mission.<br/><br/>Prime Minister's office sources said that the members felt that some incentives should be put in place for using water in a sustainable manner. It was also felt that the Research and Development requirements of the Mission should be focused upon. <br/><br/>Many Members stressed the need to use the opportunities from the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, which already prioritizes community-level water security.<br/><br/>The Ministers of Finance, Power, Water Resources, Non-conventional and Renewable Energy Resources, Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Minister (Independent Charge) Environment and Forest and Members of the Council were present in the meeting.
