Need to improve quality of publications on science in India: Secretary

India will attain fifth position this year globally, in terms of number of publications in science writings, but need for quality publications is a far cry. The Secretary in the Department of Science and Technology Prof Ashutosh Sharma expressed a need to improve the quality of publications on science in the country while speaking in a plenary session during the ongoing National Science Congress in Mysuru today. <br/><br/>To improve the quality of research, the Department has started High risk-High Gain scheme, Research Initiation Scheme and Young Scientists scheme for researchers in the country. Prof Sharma informed that 70 super computers are being set up across the country at a cost of 4500 crore rupees to help researchers. Saying that India is sought after by overseas Research and Development set-ups, he said, a sum of 10 billion dollars was invested by overseas R&D centres in the country last year. Speaking on the occasion, the Permanent member of Niti Aayog, Dr. V K Saraswat informed that India is suffering due to lack of breakthroughs in the field of Sensors, nano materials and devices.
