Need for modernizing food industry: Minister of Food Processing

The Minister of Food Processing Subodh Kant Sahay has underlined the need for modernized food industry to enhance the quality of meat and poultry products in the country. Speaking at a National Conference on Meat and Poultry Processing Industry, the minister said that the government has launched a comprehensive scheme for modernization of abattoirs across the country for this purpose. Expressing concern over only 2 per cent contribution in meat production in the world market, he said that contamination and deterioration of meat should be avoidable. He said that 100 per cent FDI has been permitted in the sector to tap the opportunities available in the sector. Mr Sahay said that the ministry is also providing incentives to encourage research and development in food processing for product and process development and improved packaging. AIR Correspondent reports that the three- day conference will hold discussions like untapped potential, technology of value addition for meat food products.<br/><br/>
