Nearly 18 crore bank accounts opened under PMJDY

Nearly 18 crore bank accounts have been opened under Pradhan Mantri Jan DhanYojana (PMJDY) and 15.74 crore Rupay Debit cards have been issued to the account holders so far. The scheme was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and launched on 28th of August last year. AIR correspondent reports that over 22 thousand core rupees have been deposited in the bank accounts since the launch of the scheme.<br/><br/>According to the Finance Ministry, after opening of bank accounts, now the focus of PMJDY has shifted to the provision of cash-out facilities to the beneficiaries. Banks have been asked to disburse overdraft facility upto five thousand rupees under the scheme and Aadhaar will not be mandatory for availing this facility. <br/><br/>Indian Banks Association has been asked to issue revised guidelines to all banks in this regard.Till 1st of September, around one lakh sixty five thousand account holders have availed the overdraft facility under the scheme.
