Opposition National Democratic Alliance, NDA's nominee Jaswant Singh today filed his nomination papers for the Vice Presidential poll in the presence of senior BJP leaders including Mr L K Advani, Mrs Sushma Swaraj and NDA convenor Mr Sharad Yadav. Today was the last day for the filing the nominations for 7th August poll. 74-year-old Singh, whose candidature was declared by NDA on 16th of this month, filed his papers before Returning Officer for Vice Presidential Poll and Secretary General of Lok Sabha Mr T K Viswanathan.
Three sets of papers- one each by Mr L K Advani, Mrs Sumitra Mahajan and Mr Yashwant Sinha- supporting Mr Singh's candidature were submitted to Mr Viswanathan. Soon after filing his nomination, Singh said elections to the high offices of President and Vice-President are historic moments.
Ruling UPA's Vice Presidential candidate Mohammad Hamid Ansari had already filed his nomination papers on Wednesday in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and leaders of the ruling coalition.
According to Mr. Viswanath 42 nomination papers were filed till the last day of nomination. Four nomination papers were rejected on the spot as certified copy of the electoral roll entry of candidates were not attached. The scrutiny for the Vice Presidential Poll will take place tomorrow.
