The National Democratic Alliance, NDA deferred its decision on Presidential candidate. The crucial meet in New Delhi on the issue remained inconclusive. Addressing the media after the meeting at senior BJP leader L K Advani's residence on Sunday, JDU leader and convener of the NDA, Sharad Yadav said that all leaders put forth their views in detail but more discussions are required in this regard to arrive at the right decision.
Mr Yadav said that Mr Advani and he himself will talk to Chief Ministers of NDA-ruled States and all others and NDA will meet sometime later again to take a decision in this regard.
Besides Mr. Advani, the leaders who attended the meeting include BJP President Nitin Gadkari, senior party leader Jaswant Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitly, JDU leader and convener of the NDA, Sharad Yadav and Shivanand Tiwari and SAD leader Naresh Gujaral. Shiv Sena did not attend the meeting.
Speaking to mediapersons in New Delhi, the BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said that the process of Presidential elections has just begun and no nominations have been filed as yet. The Party is considering the matter seriously and will come out with consensus soon.
As the Election Commission issued the notification for the Presidential poll on Sturday, the process has already been started. The last date for making nominations is the 30th of this month. Polling for the President's poll, if necessary, will take place on July 19th.
The UPA had announced the candidature of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee for the highest Constitutional post and appealed to all political parties including NDA to support his candidature.
The Congress spokesman, Rashid Alvi said that the Congress President has appealed all political parties to support the candidature of Mr. Pranab Mukherjee for the office of the President.
Meanwhile, Mr. P.A. Sangama said that he continues to be in the fray for the election of the President.
