National Commission for Women, NCW, has taken suo motu cognizance of the Lakhimpur incident in Uttar Pradesh where a 14-year old girl was allegedly raped and murdered by a group of policemen. NCW Chairperson Yasmin Abrar said that the UP government should take strict action against the accused and maintain law and order in the State. She said that the Commission was concerned about the actions of UP Police. AIR correspondent reports that the body of the victim was found on a tree in the police compound in Lakhimpur after she had reportedly entered the compound while grazing her cattle. Meanwhile the National Human Rights Commission has also sought a detailed report from the UP government on the incident within four weeks.
