The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) today issued notice to Nestle, the manufacturer of Maggi noodles, on the Centre's plea seeking about 640 crore rupees in damages for alleged unfair trade practices, false labelling and misleading advertisements. Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain said after the preliminary hearing that the court has also sought fresh, sealed samples to be tested by accredited labs. He said, further course of action will be decided by the Consumer Affairs Ministry.

The Ministry had filed a class action suit against Nestle, the first time the government dragged a company to NCDRC using a provision in the nearly three-decade-old Consumer Protection Act.
In a relief to Nestle, the Bombay High Court had last week lifted the ban on the sale of nine various instant noodle brands and ordered fresh tests in three separate labs to ascertain that the products complied with the country's food safety norms.

However, Consumer Affairs and Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan had said that the High Court verdict does not alter the grounds on which it has claimed 640 crore rupees in damages from Nestle.
