NC decides not to withdraw Poudel from Nepal PM race

With just a day left for the fifth round voting to elect a new Prime Minister on Monday, Nepali Congress has decided not to withdraw its candidate Ram Chandra Poudel from the electoral race. A meeting of the party leaders held in Kathmandu on Sunday felt that the withdrawal the party candidate under pressure from CPN (UML) and Maoist at this stage would create a vacuum and confusion.Meanwhile, the CPN (UML) has disclosed a concept paper for concluding the peace process and drafting of the new constitution within the next four months and urged both the Unified Maoist and Nepali Congress to withdraw their candidates from the electoral fray to pave way for consensus among the parties to form a national unity government. CPN (UML)'s proposal envisages the completion of the integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist army in four months and dismantling of the paramilitary structure of the Maoist youth wing prior to that, along with return of the seized properties. The Maoist Chairman Prachanda and Nepali Congress Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel are in the fray for the fifth round of voting to be held on Sunday a new Prime Minister.Amidst growing anger at the failure of Nepal’s major parties to elect a new Prime Minister even after four rounds of voting, nearly two dozen smaller parties have threatened to launch a protest movement including boycott of parliament if Monday’s poling also fails to elect a new Prime Minister. With the CPN (UML) declaring to remain neutral yet again, the prospects of electing a new Prime Minister seem extremely dim. The United Democratic Front – a bloc of four Tarai parties that could have made a difference, are still undecided. The decisions of UML and the four Tarai parties to remain neutral, refusing to help either of the candidates to reach a majority has led to the failure of the parliament to elect a new Prime Minister in the past four rounds of voting.
