In Chhattisgarh, a bridge on the National highway No. 30 running through the Bastar division was damaged by a powerful landmine fitted by the Naxalites.The blast took place near Bania village. No casualty has been reported in the blast. The vehicular movement on the road has since been restored.Police have stepped up their search operation in the area. Naxalites also blasted off a newly built watch-tower near ‘Charre Marre’ water-fall in the Kanker district today.In another incident, the ultras killed a village headman this evening in the Ambeli village of Bijapur district.The incidents are being viewed as in retaliation of the recent killing of Maoist leader Kisenji in West Bengal. Today’s naxal incidents in the Bastar division of the state are in continuation of similar Maoist activities during the last two days.The Naxalites had given a call for two days’ Bharat bandh ending Monday, which marked especially road and rail blockades in half a dozen places in the interior areas of the Bastar division.The blasting off of a bridge on the busy National Highway 30 connecting capital Raipur with Jagdalpur, the centre point of Bastar, that too in broad day light is being viewed as an attempt by the Maoists to put their signature of presence in the vicinity of towns away from their habitual jungle hide outs. Having already gauged the heat generated by such Naxal activities in the past, the police too have girded up its loin to frustrate any such Naxal attempt leading to casualties.
