Nawaz Sharif headed for a third term in Pak

Election results from Pakistan's general election show, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif is headed for a third term after a resounding victory. Results for 166 of the 272 parliamentary seats that went to the polls have been declared. Nawaz Sharif's PML-N has bagged 95 seats and Imran Khan's party 21. Trends show that the PML-N was set to bag in excess of 125 seats, while Imran Khan's Tehrik-e-Insaf and the Pakistan Peoples Party were lagging far behind with 34 and 32 seats.

The election proved to be a resounding victory for a man who spent seven years in exile and another five in opposition waiting for his chance to govern again. Supporters danced in the streets overnight in his hometown of Lahore, Pakistan's second largest city and the provincial capital of Punjab province. Sharif now faces the monumental task of governing a country with rising inflation, rolling blackouts, and a powerful Taliban insurgency.
