Nawaz Sharif all set to form new govt in Pak, says good relations with India top priority

Nawaz Sharif is all set to become Pakistan's Prime Minister for a record third term with his PML-N party taking an unassailable lead in Parliamentary elections. Trends from 264 of the 272 seats show that the PML-N is set to bag in excess of 125 seats. Sharif needs 137 seats for a majority.

Sharif has already made it clear that he intends to revive the Indo-Pak peace process which was interrupted in 1999 when he was ousted from power. He had started the peace process with then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He also said that making good relations with India will be his top priority.

Sharif may marginally fall short of absolute majority but will be able to make it up by getting the support of independent candidates and smaller rightist parties.

Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf lagged behind bagging 32 seats. The Pakistan People's Party has clinched 32 seats. In New Delhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh congratulated Sharif for his emphatic victory in the elections and invited him to visit India at a mutually convenient time.

In a statement, US Secretary of State John Kerrycongratulated the people of Pakistan and said the Obama Administration is looking forward to working with the new government.

In a statement, Afghan President Hamid Karzai hoped that the bilateral relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan would further expand under the newly elected government.
