The Navy today asserted that its primary responsibility is to secure the Indian interests in the high seas. Navy chief Admiral Nirmal Verma said in New Delhi that its main task post 26/11 attack in Mumbai has been to bring on board a single forum consisting of all players and agencies involved in maritime activities and security of coastal areas. He also said that the Navy has not diluted its main task of securing the high seas and the sea lanes of communication to safeguard the Indian interest in the Indian Ocean region. Talking to reporters on the eve of Navy Day, Admiral Verma said, the task is also to bring together all the different agencies and ministries involved in maritime activities, coordination among them to ensure security of the coast and vital installations, and intelligence sharing. <br/>He said, the Navy is coming out with a National Maritime Domain Awareness document, which will be given to all government departments with stake in maritime activity and security. He said, the Navy had brought on board the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which is protecting vital installations of the country along the coast including India's nuclear plants near Chennai and Mumbai.
