Navy Chief Admiral R.K. Dhowan today commissions INS Vishwakarma

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral R.K. Dhowan today commissioned INS Vishwakarma, the erstwhile Shipwright School and a premier training establishment of the Indian Navy in Visakhapatnam today.

INS Vishwakarma is named after the Indian mythological architect and master craftsman – Vishwakarma.

Shipwright School (SWS) was established at INS Shivaji in 1941 for training shipwright artificers of Indian Navy and was subsequently shifted to Naval Barracks, Mumbai (now INS Angre) in 1943. It was shifted to the present premises at Visakhapatnam in 1981 as a dedicated training establishment with independent facilities for training of shipwright apprentices.

In keeping with the Navy's thrust toward indigenisation and 'Make in India', the role of the Shipwright School has assumed greater significance today in honing warship and submarine design and construction skills. With the commissioning of INS Vishwakarma, the Shipwright School as a full-fledged Naval training establishment, the Navy will complete the technical training triad of the Indian Navy viz Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering and Electrical Engineering.
