The Navy has begun its operation to clear the channel off the Mumbai Coast for harbour traffic. It is expected that restricted navigation may start by this evening. The Navy is using helicopters and some ships to assist them in this operation.There are reports that while the salvagers of MSC Chitra were conducting their operations yesterday, anchor of the barge broke and some bottles of pesticide started hitting the shores of Raigad and Mumbai. However, according to a release issued by the Press Information Bureau, analysis of water sample has not revealed any contamination from hazardous chemical. Meanwhile operations to collect floating containers continued and cranes were used for the purpose. Union Minister for Shipping, Mr. G K Vasan and Secretary, Shipping, Mr. K Mohandas, will be visiting Mumbai today to review the ongoing operations.Meanwhile the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation(BMC) has asked Maharashtra government to give compensation to local fishermen in wake of banning fishing off Mumbai coast to clear oil spill. For the local fishermen this is the only source of income. BMC Standing Committee Chairman Rahul Shewale informed that he has written a letter to the Chief Minister Ashok Chavan in this regard.
